Master Socket Wires Cut: Sabotage?

I have recently moved house and began setting up router. When unable to do so, we opened the BT master socket and discovered the electrical wires have been cut! (see attached picture). Why would someone do this?

Since this is damage to BT equipment, will the £85 charge apply to have someone come fix this?

If so, would rather just by wire strippers and reattach them. Seems like a waste of money considering we hadn't even been moved in a week!

Re: Master Socket Wires Cut: Sabotage?

Could it be that the installation was never completed in the first place?

Re: Master Socket Wires Cut: Sabotage?

I can't really see if the wires are actually attached to the back of that master socket or not from that photo. There appear to be 2 wires - blue and orange - going up out of sight to the back of the master socket where the incoming line connects to. It's common to have one pair of wires connected and another pair spare and not connected.

Also, you don't use wire strippers with IDC terminals. You're supposed to use a special IDC tool to push the wires into the terminals.

Re: Master Socket Wires Cut: Sabotage?

Indeed, the incoming cable only uses 2 wires, others are just left unconnected as shown in your photo.

Nothing looks amiss, so if it doesn't work as a telephone raise a fault with your phone provider.

If it works as a phone but not for broadband, over to your ISP (presumably PlusNet).

Do you have a cored landline to plus in and check for a dial tone.

If not carefully remove the Master Socket from the wall and have a look at the back - are there any wires connected?

It looks like we've arranged an engineer visit for tomorrow

Can you let us know how it goes?
