Mac Command Line FTP Client

Has anyone ever managed to connect, and upload, files to the PlusNet FTP server (ftp.plus.net) using the command line 'ftp' program on Mac OS X (10.5)?
I was trying last night and it was failing, but my linux box managed it fine (thus ruling out the FTP server).
I don't really use FTP enough to justify getting a GUI program, so I was just wondering if anyone had ever managed it...
(I debated whether to put this here or everything internet... and here won in the end)

FireFTP is an excellent FTP for FireFox if you want a GUI.
Works on Linux and presumably it will also work on a Mac.

Yeah, I do have that installed, but it's not working with the Beta version just now. I'd rather just work out why the command line one doesn't work.
