I host a website on a computer at home, registered and hosted by plusnet.
I wish to make use of my 250MB webspace at www.username.free-online.net, so that i can avoid always having to upload files from my home computer.
I am pretty sure that I can do this by adding direct references to the free-online URL but don't want to do this.
(Unfortunately I chose my house name as a username, and don't want to advertise this)
Can I get around this somehow?

You simply add it to what ever you are linking so if its a file normally the link would be test.zip all you do is add the full url
www.username.free-online.net/test.zip
same with a picture instead of gold.jpg it would be www.username.free-online.net/gold.jpg
and for a webpage instead of test.html it would be
www.username.free-online.net/test.html
www.username.free-online.net/test.zip

He stated he does not want to use his www URL as it contains his house name.
The only option I can think of is to register another domain (not from PN, they are far too expensive) and hopst it on your account then point it to your www webspace. Use someone like 1and1.co.uk or daily.co.uk as registrations are much cheaper.

Hi
One option you have, is to use our subsidiary company JTN, who specialise in domain names and offer url masking.
This will cost £14.09 a year, but will mask your free-online url.
So anyone that goes to your space, will continue to see the domain name instead.

Any queries, give me a shout

Nice try but JTN are way too expensive. Use either of the 2 I stated: £5 for 2 years for a .co.uk domain.

Cheap may not mean better value. JTN is reasonably priced, and there are no hidden catches. Personally I once used 1&1 solely based on their advertised price and ended up having an awful customer experience and wishing I'd paid tenfold for less hassle; especially when trying to transfer away.
Offering domains close to or lower than the wholesale price usually means other hidden costs or heavy upsell techniques.
It's also worth considering the advantage of UK based support, all under the same roof (that is, technicians who understand your plusnet hosting account explicitly and your domain's relationship towards it)

I pay UK2 a bit more than that - including VAT it works out at £16.42 per year: what I get for that is the domain name registered and hosted and 2 POP3 email accounts and hosting of five more email addresses that are redirected to email accounts anywhere I choose. The pricey bit is that incoming URL-requests are redirected to my PlusNet webspace. I doubt you'd get all that from 1and1 for a fiver.
But I do pay for two years at a time.

I've been using 1and1 for years with many domains registered through them and not had a problem yet. I only use it for registrations, I don't use any of their hosting or email services.
Daily are a fairly new company and again so far I have not had any problems with their domain registrations.
So 'cheap' does not always mean compromising the service - PN should know about that one
UK2 on the other hand has had a lot of bad press recently relating to support and intermittent access so not one I would recommend.
