Is there a problem with speed restrictions on Netflix

I don't use it but this is the result from Samknows and it used to be rock solid a1 15.5Mb/schart_1483023147.png

Re: Is there a problem with speed restrictions on Netflix

Interesting to see that graph I use Netflix myself and have never noticed speed restrictions even when streaming in HD.

Re: Is there a problem with speed restrictions on Netflix

Hi

Not sure what the graph normally looks like, but that is what you should see on wireshark for netflix, same as iplayer, they burst chunks of data like that so they can quickly switch bandwidths if needed. In the olden days you would stream as much data as you could and it was a single bitrate that you picked.

By small bursts of data its more efficient to start sd, hd then up to 4k if bandwidth permits, then back to hd or sd as congestion comes in or the bursts cant keep up.

Not sure what samknows does though, if they have a way of just taking a constant stream of data.

Under EU law ISPs cant throttle a single service like Netflix for net nutrality reasons, comcast (i think) or another big US isp tried it, throttles netflix down and then ask users to pay up if they wanted higher bitrates. They got slammed for doing that though, (https://consumerist.com/2014/02/23/netflix-agrees-to-pay-comcast-to-end-slowdown/)

Re: Is there a problem with speed restrictions on Netflix

I think that Samknows graph must be showing the results of isolated tests conducted at various times (with more frequent tests done during peak hours). As such, it probably doesn't make much sense to draw the line between the points.

Re: Is there a problem with speed restrictions on Netflix

For comparism here is  my chart of the last years worth of data - there is a single dip with 2 data points (0.56Mbps) on 8th Dec, the rest are consistently 15.6Mbps.   Not sure why you are seeing so many more dips in speed - are you on the new network? (still on old here)

I checked the panel data we have access to earlier and I didn't spot any widespread deterioration. May be something specific to you Jim Undecided

This my chart for the whole of December - you can see when it went adrift

The change appeared to happen after my last resync (G.INP enabled on upstream)
