Re: Is there a DNS or general PN netwk problem today (Tue 12 Nov 2019) ?

It's been a problem since about 02:15 today, see attached. I contacted them about it with evidence at 8am and was told there are no problems. Rubbish. Their service staus shows no problems anywhere for a year, which I find hard to believe as this has been all day. Unfortunately my "Plusnet Hub one" doesn't allow manually changing the DNS so i've had to edit the DNS manually in all the PCs on our link (8.8.8.8 works fine).

Done the same, and websites load quickly again. Glad to see Plusnet acknowledging the problem now.

I am also experiencing the same issues that others have posted.

Why is the service status page showing "No open events." when clearly there are problems?

Re: Is there a DNS or general PN netwk problem today (Tue 12 Nov 2019) ?

Anyone on an old TG585 (like moi) who wants to change the default DNS servers as a workaround will need to login to the router over telnet to do so.

I'm on linux and have a script to do so.

the sleeps might be overkill but it can be a sluggard so better safe than sorry.

and no, my router password is not "P A S S W D", its just a placeholder.

the redirect saves the session as a text file in case you want to review it.

This is an information-only post: if you do this and duck up your router config, I won't be here to provide support, and nor will I try and remember how to do this on Windoze.

{ echo "admin" ; sleep 2; echo "P A S S W D";sleep 2; echo "dns server route add dns=8.8.8.8 metric=1 intf=Internet"; sleep 4; echo "dns server route add dns=8.8.4.4 metric=2 intf=Internet"; sleep 5; echo "dns server route list"; sleep 4 ; echo "saveall"; sleep 5; echo "exit"; } | telnet 192.168.1.254 > routerlog.0

Yup, me too. I thought it might be DNS as the speed is there but it just takes a long time to get anywhere. Guess I'll hit Google DNS for now.

Seems fine for me as well.  I haven't changed any settings, so thanks for sorting it so quickly.

We completed a work around that should resolve the issues at about 5pm yesterday.

Thanks for flagging it, without you guys it would have taken us longer.

@mark752 - It should always forward your DNS requests to the Primary unless it is unreachable and then it will try the Secondary.

Re: Is there a DNS or general PN netwk problem today (Tue 12 Nov 2019) ?

Hello skck, the issue on 12th Nov affected every plusnet customer I know. However I didn't see any DNS timeouts yesterday (graph attached - you can see the 12th Nov outage on the 60 day plot, compare it to my earlier post). So what is affecting you now isn't as widespread (on my sample tested of just me!). Try opening a command prompt (if using Windows) and typing (e.g.) "nslookup bt.com". On 12th Nov, that would timeout most of the time. Remember you can work around it by setting your DNS to a public one, Google's "8.8.8.8" worked for me.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. Ping and lookup works fine, but getting the same symptoms as before. Slow or unresponsive webpages. Changing local PC to google DNS and performance is fine.

Thanks for your post @skck

There are no widespread issues reported that we're aware of.

Out of curiosity if you set the DNS servers manually to ours do you have the same issue? Our DNS servers are 212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50

Let us know how you get on

Re: Is there a DNS or general PN netwk problem today (Tue 12 Nov 2019) ?

Hello , those aren't the DNS servers assigned to my Plusnet Hub One. I checked with a friend who is using his own Microtik router, and both of our routers are being assigned 212.159.6.9 & .10 (screenshot attached). As mentioned elsewhere, the Hub One cannot have those settings changed manually. It's down to the users (assuming they know how) to change the DNS settings on every device using the Internet connection (in my case many people and many more devices, it's a pain).

Re: Is there a DNS or general PN netwk problem today (Tue 12 Nov 2019) ?

Hi Everyone,

Just found this thread as I have been having the same sort of problem for last 10 days and for a week in mid October.

I have swapped the plus net one router for a Draytek so I can change the DNS servers.

I haven't found a DNS that works better than the plusnet ones.

If I ping googles 8.8.8.8 the test times out but 8.8.4.4 get results of around 15ms

Trace route get stuck at 4 hops , see below

Have managed to download Opera, took a long while to find the site but download was quick...

Using the VPN allows me to access the BBC site that I cannot get to with Chrome.

We had the Openreach engineer here for 7 hours last Monday who suggested the problem was with BT Wholesale.

Since then Plus Net call centre say a fault guy will ring me but all I have had is an email asking if I want to close the fault.

Any bright ideas as to what I try next?

Thanks Chris
