How do I copy files on my web space

Hello,
I want to copy the contents of one directory to another in my area on ftp.plus.net.  Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to telnet into this area ...
Is there any way to initiate a copy on the ftp space?  or am I restricted to doing a download first and then an upload to get the stuff copied?
(It is very annoying to try doing it this way because of constant timeouts from the plus net FTP server) - incidentally, does anyone else find this timeout issue on FTP annoying?  Why is it so bad?
Thanks,
Alan

I don't find the timeouts annoying - because I don't see any!
Have you tried changing the passive mode setting in your FTP software?

Re: How do I copy files on my web space

Wow, swift reply 🙂
It gives me hope to think there might be a way to stop the infuriating timeouts!  Cheesy
I'm using Filezilla and passive mode is currently disabled, but I'll try enabling it to see if it makes a difference.  The other setting I changed recently that seemed to ease the issue a bit was to disable the 'use multiple connections' option.  Could it be my firewall too?  (Cyber Armour Personal Firewall - I'll try killing it for a bit while the upload happens)
I'm also still in need of a way to copy files locally using a remote command like cp through telnet if it were possible to telnet into the ftp.plus.net area ...

Re: How do I copy files on my web space

Passive mode seems to be better disabled (didn't seem to upload at all with passive mode enabled)
I also tried disabling my firewall and virus checker but that didn't affect the timeout situation.  I get a timeout every 20 or so transfers ...
I also got this message once or twice ...
'530 Sorry, the maximum number of clients (4) for this user are already connected.' but after a pause and an auto reconnect Filezilla continued to successfully upload more files.
What would be really useful is to get a list of recommended settings for the options of Filezilla that might effect uploads to ftp.plus.net.
I'm also still interested to know if there is any way to initiate a copy on the ftp.plus.net server (I can't telnet in ... is this the same for everyone?)

Re: How do I copy files on my web space

I just noticed this in my Filezilla FTP log so thought that this might have been something to do with the timeouts ...

so I set 'speed limits' to the values shown in the log - but I'm still getting timeouts ...
I've just also noticed I've got compression turned on ... so I've turned that off - still getting timouts 😞
If it helps to see the log just before a timeout happens ...

Re: How do I copy files on my web space

I think the next thing to try is a different FTP client. Can I suggest you give the FireFTP add-on for Mozilla a go as I have found that pretty reliable.
I'm not aware of any way of copy files on the homepages (ftp.plus.net) server.

Re: How do I copy files on my web space

Hi
For moving files around within my web space, I've found that using Internet Explorer is ok.
