How To Block VPN that allows access to Safeguards Blocked Content

The youngster in our house is using a VPN on his mobile to get past the blocked categories and websites I have added to Plusnet Safeguard

Is there a way to stop him accessing this blocked content

Thanks

Re: How To Block VPN that allows access to Safeguards Blocked Content

If you only access web sites as a family you can block ports other than HTTP and HTTPS that will block most VPN applications using the PlusNet Broadband firewall in the member centre.

Be aware though that this isn't full proof though - some VPN clients can present themselves as HTTPS traffic which makes them hard to block.

1) Take away his mobile until he accepts observing the 'rules' you have stipulated!

2) You could try adding the VPN site URL's to Safeguards blocked websites if 1) is not an option. However you'll need to know which VPN services he's using

Safeguard is very easy to get around - all the child has to do is change the DNS servers on their phone to use Googles and Safeguard is bypassed.

Believe me kids know this, and share the workarounds...

@tcj1971

If the youngster is bright enough to get around your safeguards you are not going to win without conflict. So grasp the nettle and confiscate the phone until he can be trusted to use it responsibly.

Re: How To Block VPN that allows access to Safeguards Blocked Content

Thanks all for the replies

It is not like he is looking at porn, well not that I can see anyway😎. It is just certain social media sites that we do not want him on as they seem to be causing him more trouble than its worth.

These social media sites are on the our Safeguard block list and were not accessable until he started using the VPN

The VPN on his phone is SuperVPN Free VPN Client

Re: How To Block VPN that allows access to Safeguards Blocked Content

@tcj1971 well, for a start , I'd get that VPN client off his phone urgently!. Have a read of this https://www.top10vpn.com/reviews/supervpn-free-vpn-client/ .

As @Baldrick1 says, the only solution is to confiscate the phone until he's willing to abide by the rules.

and add NOT installing another VPN client to the rules!.

I'm so glad that my kids are long since grown up and I never had the problem of mobile phones and internet to cope with when they were young. Its a nightmare...

@MisterW

Yes I was going to mention in my last post some of the reviews about the VPN client....very dodge

When I googled the VPN client earlier to try and find a url to add to Safeguard, I looked on the review site you have put and oh dear.

SuperVPN Free VPN Client Pros & Cons

PROS
  1. None - this VPN is unsafe

CONS

  1. Requires unnecessary permissions
  2. Vague logging policy
  3. Shady developer behaviour
  4. Persistent, annoying adverts
  5. Limited number of locations
  6. Terrible value 'VIP' upgrade

Re: How To Block VPN that allows access to Safeguards Blocked Content

@tcj1971 any Free VPN should be looked at with suspicion!. It costs money to provide a VPN service, you need servers and internet bandwidth to provide the VPN service, they cost money and that has to be obtained somehow. Advertising and collecting data come immediately to mind as methods of getting revenue.

Re: How To Block VPN that allows access to Safeguards Blocked Content

I do agree education is probably the best solution here - I've had similar problems with my own child. Even if you block your connection he can always use mobile data and/or other WiFi points.

One last thought you could install an MDM app to lock the device down (similar to Airwatch for corporate customers) to prevent apps being installed and run without your permission.
