Google Apps authentication needs root server for my hostname.

Forgive my stupid question.
Trying to setup Google Apps with my Plusnet domain.   Most of the authentication systems rely on my having to upload a file to http://mydomain.com
I only have a http://www.mydomain.com in my DNS records, and despite trying everything I can think of, I can't seem to create a record that points to somwhere where I can put the authentication file to Google needs to see.
Help!!!!!
I am currently attempting to use the CNAME version,  but the record that Google gave me has uppercase characters in it, which Plusnet reject.   I have changed it to lower-case, in the hope it might be OK, anyone know if this will eventually work, or am I on a road to nowhere with that method?

Left field Type Pri Right field
www cname ccgi.plus.net.
xxxyyyyzzzzz cname xxxyyyyzzzzzxxxyyyyzzzzzxxxyyzzxxxyyyyzzzzz.domainverify.googlehosted.com.
ccgi cname ccgi.plus.net.

Re: Google Apps authentication needs root server for my hostname.

Have you an A record set up to point to our CGI servers? e.g.
domain.com.              A                 84.92.1.4

Without that http://domain.com will be pointing to our Homepages servers (ftp.plus.net) rather than the CGI servers.
