Force9 .htaccess and .htpassword

Hello,
I have been trying to set up password protected access using my webspace accessible via the Force9 ftp (ftp.force9.net).  Despite repeated attempts and following the Plusnet guidance, I have been unable to sucessfully do this.  Could someone please provide advice on how the files should be configured?  I have also tried using the encrypted password using the tool provided at http://users.plus.net/htpasswd/
