Hi all,
I'm having some issues with my webspace and I'm hoping someone might be able to offer up a solution.
I'm in the process of creating an online portfolio of my design work and I'm intending on loading flash movies as slideshows into my site. On testing a file, I've found that the pre-loader works then the file seems to freeze. When I test locally or put up on a clients space (not PlusNet) it works fine, but not on my PN webspace.
The file on my PN space is here: http://ccgi.bertrude.plus.com/pro04.swf
The same file uploaded to a clients space is here: Same file elsewhere
Anyone got any clues as to why this might be happening as it currently renders my site-to-be useless.
A different file in the same space also shows loading problems too:
http://ccgi.bertrude.plus.com/pro01.swf
I just don't get it. I've never experienced anything like this before with swf files. I don't know if it's related or not to this problem but my BB+ speeds have been naff at the mo too, despite my router reporting a DownStream Connection Speed of 3648 kbps.

Pro1.swf loads fine, although pro4.swf only loads from the 'alternative' location.
pro1.swf is hopefully just a test, as the rapidly flashing sequence isn't too friendly!
Presumably your ftp client was set to upload in binary, rather than automatic mode wasn't it?

Morning James.
Ta for the quick response. The flashing sequence is actually the problem as there should be a proper slideshow like the pro04.swf at the alernative location. It seems that both are misbehaving.
Having checked FireFTP, it seems that the upload setting are on ASCII as I think I had them on this for uploading a php script to my cgi space.
Should it be on binary then? I'll try re-uploading using that setting.
EDIT: Just re-uploaded in Binary mode and they work a treat. Thank you so much! What a simple error to make

I don't know a great deal about uploading/webspace etc, but I was under the impression that ASCII should be used for uploading text (html/php/xml etc) and binary should be used for uploading images (jpg/gif/etc)
On that basis I'd have expected the file structure of a .swf to be closer to that of an image file rather than a text file.
But its a fairly uneducated guess! Just know I had troubles uplading some images to my webspace when I was using the wrong mode - they often appeared to be correct, but would be slightly corrupted.

It worked, so it was a great guess! Cheers.
I can now carry on with one less worry.
You're probably sick of hearing this and my apolgies for going off topic but is there anything I can do about my speeds? Am I being throttled in some way? I've actually managed to do a BT speedtest (I know, it's a miracle) and got the results below - the speeds seem very poor compared to the downstream speed but the IP profile is lower than it has been before. I usually turn my router off when not in use. Should I leave in on for a couple of days straight to see if the IP profile will improve?
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 1250 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 3648 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 847 kbps

Decent ftp clients have an automatic setting where it uses the file extension to determine whether to do an ASCII or binary transfer. You usually have to add to the list of ASCII extensions manually, but once you have set it up for the file extensions you use you can forget it.
(ASCII transfers have the end of lines converted between Windows and Unix/Linux format)

Thanks for that. I normally just use Dreamweaver but I've recently found FireFTP to be quite convenient for uploading swf files without having to open Dreamweaver.
I'm new to it, but having checked the automatic mode, there are indeed a list of file extensions that it will recognose as ASCII so I think auto will be the way to go
. It's nice to know what I did wrong though, such a simple fix.
