My son has bought a domain name and wants it to point straight to his games server, I know how to make it work for a normal website but this is a new one for me, I guess to 123.reg settings have to point to the ip as in xx.xx.xx.xx:9257 ? help?

Hello there zpeterk,
Do you know which game it is, and where is the domain DNS is hosted? Plusnet, Just-The-Name, or else where?
Thanks,
Matt

It is currently with 123.reg, the games vary as do the port numbers, he has the required ports forwarded to the server.

Hey,
Depending on what the game is, and if it supports the record type.
You could create an SRV type DNS record, which forwards to the port.
More information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SRV_record
Hope this helps,
Matt

I am having a bit of trouble getting the host name part correct, I read it should be of the form _srv._tcp.mc.wickedsnake.co.uk. but it does not work, has any any ideas?
Got it by going through al combinations its _mc_tcp.wickedsnake.co.uk

I thought it was something like this:
They might have included _mc as well, I'm not sure! but if it works, that's the main thing
_minecraft._tcp.mc.wickedsnake.co.uk.

easier way of doing it would be to set an A record and then it would be simply a) domain.co.uk:9876 or b) domain.co.uk and the game auto attempts its default port
