Countering the removal of static IPs

Hey community. I retained PN with a house move, as otherwise I have no issue with the service. It was actually a very seamless experience, with the service active before I got my keys from the estate agent.

However, I have lost the static IP I used to have, and now told by customer support this service has been withdrawn. On this call, I took the opportunity to raise a complaint / feedback with 1 of their managers - being the only thing that I (a paying customer) could do. If enough of these come through, perhaps they will change their offerings.

Now, to my question... How do we work around this? I self-host services from my external IP address. If the IP changes, these will no longer work, such as an open source password manager, document sync & share app, and many more.

On the router, a Dynamic DNS option is available, but it is an external domain (managed via 123-reg.co.uk) so I don't believe this would work. Could I run a Docker container within my local network to do some check & update? Or at least notify? is there another external service to do the same?

Thanks

Re: Countering the removal of static IPs

@bowpoison If you retained the service via a house move, your account should have remained the same - i.e, if it was <myaccountname@myaccount.plus.net>, then that should be what it is now, and as the static IP is associated with that account, you should still have it.

Having said that, there have been a few instances recently where the link has been 'broken' for some reason. The only way I have seen this resolved is by the intervention of Help Team members (Plusnet staff), who unfortunately don't seem to be around at weekends.

@Townman  / @MisterW  - is this something on the SU's radar?

That is true in general, but not on a product change / house move where the ACCOUNT remains the same.

This needs to be fixed, not worked around.  I will escalate this.

@jab1 - yes it is, I will add it to the class!

As @jab1 says , you should keep the account and associated static IP over the house move. Customer support gave you incorrect information. Yes, static IPs are no longer available to new customers or existing customers who dont already have one, but existing customers who already have one can retain it.

@jab1 yes it is on our radar and we've been assured that static IPs should remain on the account. In fact I believe one of the forum staff has previously confirmed that on a public post (can't find it at the moment)

Meanwhile I'll escalate this thread to try and get one on the forum staff to intervene and put the static back

edit: seems @Townman types faster than me and has already escalated

Forum staff can usually get the account info from the forum account. If they can't , they will post on here requesting the account name by PM.

Re: Countering the removal of static IPs

I've just added this case of loss of static IP to another thread where Dave was asking for examples of this still happening -

Re: Countering the removal of static IPs

@bowpoison,

Sorry that your static IP is not working!

Yeah, I can see you have had this previously so no reason why it should not be working.

I have done a refresh on your Static IP Component, this usually does the trick.

Can you try powering off your router and powering it back on?

If this doesn't work try a factory reset with a pin in  the 'factory reset' hole, hold it in for about 20 seconds.

If that still does not give you your static IP back, send me a private message on the forums here and I will chase it for you.

Thanks,

Lex

Re: Countering the removal of static IPs

@bowpoison, I know that you may get your static IP back in this case, but in general one solution is to use a L2TP service. This is an outgoing connection, but which provides publicly visible IPv4 and IPv6 address. The big advantage is that it can be used over any connection - including 4G - and so allows you to change ISP or in the case of an outage to fail-over to another connection without changing your IP address.

I use AAISP's L2TP service, but others are available.

Re: Countering the removal of static IPs

I run a script on a Raspberry Pi that uses CPanel on my website to update a domain if the ip address changes.

Re: Countering the removal of static IPs

Lex initially fixed this by issuing a new static IP address for me, which worked over the weekend.

Today, since the afternoon, the router has picked up another IP address and no internet works.

I I have DM’d Lex, but unsure if she is around & online still… can I ask any other staff to pick this up?

Thanks
