Re: Copyright infringement email

It's not the first time this has happened.

Someone sets up a company, and bullies people into paying for something they haven't done. Besides on my real Commodore 64, I have downloaded .d64's. Oops I have just admitted to breaking copyright too.

So it sets the frightners up to the OP, who then feel they need to pay to be left alone. Just ignore it.

I have some experience in the legal process, and that wasn't by choice and I know that sounds arrogant - neither.

Can't really go into it in public, so will have to leave it there.

Re: Copyright infringement email

For the record, nowhere in the notices referred to by the OP is there any demand for payment. That's not what the initiative is about.

Re: Copyright infringement email

I see what you're saying Bob, but if the case does eventually go to court then there will be a demand for payment - from the court.

Unless the OP is sharing anything on-line I would ignore it.

Re: Copyright infringement email

So who is doing the data gathering?

Is Plusnet providing personal details to this third party?

Re: Copyright infringement email

It is possible that any company, not just PlusNet would disclose personal details.
They could voluntarily do it. That is highly unlikely as they could get into trouble.

If legally they were forced to, then they would have to - but of course they can't tell you and you wouldn't know about it.

AFAIK, we're provided details, we send notification.

Re: Copyright infringement email

Does Plusnet perform any checks, before it sends these threatening emails?

Re: Copyright infringement email

I suspect it's as simple as deciding who was assigned a specific IP at a certain time. Doubt we do much vetting of the info we're supplied, but as previously alluded to, the consequences are negligible. The aim is to alert those that might be less mindful of what their connection is being used for.

Re: Copyright infringement email

Hi all. Sorry to bump up this thread but it seems relevant to what I'd like to ask.

How many emails are sent before you're taken to court (if at all)?

Do records automatically reset themselves after a certain period? If for example you've not downloaded for about 6 months to a year?

There seems to be some conflicting answers elsewhere on the net re. the above and with other ISPs.

Re: Copyright infringement email

You're not taken to court, regardless of the volume of notices. I don't think they reset, but could be wrong.

So why bother sending them?
