Re: Can not see old Plus files in new hosting area

I was migrated last week and managed to convert from PGV to Webtrees using the wizard.
I found all the info needed to access the database was already in lines 37 to 42 of the PGV/config.php file.
I just cut and pasted it into the wizard.

Re: Can not see old Plus files in new hosting area

Thanks for the hint. I had tried using my new DB name but got a message saying webtrees had to use the same name as PGV. As my PC was having a hissy fit (still do not know why so have had to re-install everything) I have not been able to get back to this.
It is great to be able to use Plus again. I have been experimenting with some of the free hosting sites, which have the softwere needed to run webtrees. Should mention that one of them disappeared for over a week, showing that if you do find a free lunch there might be bad side effects.
Completely different topic. Is it known if Hostopia runs a file backup? I ask this because I lost files in my early use on Plus server and was told that Plus did not back up - it was my responsibility. If you are loading files that is not a problem but webtrees is interactive and will contain data from other sources. Backup is of course good  (essential) practice but it would be useful to know the situation.

Files are backed up approximately every 4 hours. A File Restore tool is available in the Website Tools section of Control Panel (you might need to click "show more" to see this). Based on the "age" selector it looks like we could go back - in increasing steps - about 18 months.
However the tool points out the availability of backups is not guaranteed and it remains the responsibility of the user to ensure important files are backed up and saved off server as necessary.
Note that database tables are not backed up. That's down to ourselves.

Re: Can not see old Plus files in new hosting area

When you ran the transfer wizard, had you created a database in MySQL?
When running today the first question was
Where is your PhpGedView installation? and the the suggestion was ../pgv - which looks correct from the tree structure. This could be loaded by copy /paste but the result was
PhpGedView must use the same database as webtrees - a bit puzzling as the question is about directory
It is possible I confused the process as I had started to create a database in webtrees which had to be deleted before the wizard was visible.
Thanks for info about back up. I will have to keep an eye on the database

Re: Can not see old Plus files in new hosting area

I still can not make use of the transferred database. I suspect that the problem was caused by my creating a database using MySQL manager before the second transfer attempt by Hostopia. The structure that I see in FileZilla includes:-
databases > FamilyHistory..., which contains the phpgedview files starting pgv_...
logs
pgv_database which is empty
private > phpmyadmin (set up 2 days ago)
public  > containing several directories including phpmyadmin and the transferred phpgedview system files and installed webtrees.
Trying to run the webtrees transfer wizard it can not find the phpgedview database. I know from the config file what the name should be but do not know where the data should be. I have tried to download the data in the FamilyHistory directory as a backup but this is not allowed. Export from phpMyAdmin doe not produce anything sensible.
Is it safe to try to rename one of the directories using the name in the config file? Will I ned to change permissions for this. I tried to alter those of 'databases' but nothing happened

Re: Can not see old Plus files in new hosting area

The content of /databases is actually the MySQL files that contain your database management information and data even if folders in there seem to be empty. These files are probably in a format suited to fast MySQL access. In my opinion trying to use standard file access methods on them is not to be recommended. The access permissions are trying to stop you tinkering with a high risk of screwing things up. Perhaps best to take the hint and keep out of there.
Would it be best to delete existing databases and create a new one then import an export taken from the current Plusnet server? Effectively start again?
