BT Sport casting problem

We've recently been having problems with casting the BT Sport app to our Chromecast, seriously juddery playback to the point where it's unwatchable. It seems like it's trying to play back at the highest quality available rather than using adaptive bitrate streaming.

I don't think it's a problem with our broadband connection or our Wi-Fi: plugging my laptop in to the TV using an HDMI cable and playing BT Sport through a browser works fine.

Casting other apps (e.g. YouTube, BBC iPlayer) to the Chromecast all work fine too.

It seems to be something specific to BT Sport. I've nagged BT about it, and they say that because my account is with Plusnet, I need to get Plusnet to raise a fault for me.

Anybody have any suggestions before I do that?

Hi @paul_edwin,

I'm very sorry to hear that you're having issues casting to the Chromecast. Which router are you using and do you have another one there with you that you might be able to setup to see if the same problem occurs?

Re: BT Sport casting problem

Hmmm, that's an idea.

I'm currently using a Plusnet Hub Two, but I've still got my Hub One lying around somewhere. I should be able to swap that straight in and see if it makes any difference. I'll give it a go when I've got time.

Re: BT Sport casting problem

Finally got a chance to try this again …

My wife had watch the BT Sport live stream earlier in the day without any issues, but when we tried to watch something on-demand later, we got the same problem of very jerky playback.

The easiest thing to swap was the Chromecast, so I tried that first, and it just worked. 😲

That's good, but now I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to "fix" the problematic Chromecast, or investigate further.

Re: BT Sport casting problem

Thanks for the update @paul_edwin.

Sounds very odd but progress is in the right direction.

I have two Chromecasts myself so I'll try and see if I can replicate

Re: BT Sport casting problem

An update on this, in case anybody's experiencing the same problem …

It turns out that the 'working' Chromecast was connecting to a different Wi-Fi network (2.4GHz via powerline adapters). This corresponds with the suggestion via Twitter of turning off 5GHz on the Hub Two, which also fixed the problem (but leaves me without 5GHz Wi-Fi).

After two phone calls with Mike.P from support, we couldn't find any issues that might explain the problem, but apparently there had been a number of other recent reports of it. I've been given a credit against my next bill as the problem couldn't be solved, which was a nice gesture. Mike.P said he'd get back in touch if his internal enquiries turned up anything useful.

I'm buying an Ethernet adapter for the Chromecast, we'll see if that avoids the problem completely.
