Accessing webspace from Android

I don't use my webspace much, but  it has worked ok for my purposes in the past.  Just recently I changed my mobile phone and needed to add a shortcut to my web space on the browser.  I have found that the different browsers on my phone react differently ...

a/ using Firefox the main index page (at www.<username>.plus.com) opens without problems

b/ using Samsung 'Internet' I get a message "Authentication Required" with a username and password box

My mobile phone runs Android 6.0.1

I'm reluctant to enter my login details unless I understand why this is happening.   Any ideas?

Dave

Getting an "Authentication Required" message implies the Samsung Internet browser is trying to access a password protected folder - the folder access username and password are being requested. Does this browser have multiple tabs open: If there are it could be one of those which is accessing password protected content rather than your Plusnet webspace tab.

Re: Accessing webspace from Android

I closed all tabs and tried again - same issue.

However I now believe the Authorisation Request was actually coming from my (Plusnet) router as though that was intercepting my request and treating it as a  router login.

http://<username>.plus.com is requesting your username and password. The site says: “Thomson Gateway”

HTTP/1.0 401 Authorization Required  -  all pasted from my PC screen.

Perhaps one can't access one's webspace via one's Plusnet ADSL?  I've got a static IP btw.

It's not an Android problem after all!

You definitely can access your webspace using Plusnet ADSL - when you used the Firefox browser that's what you were doing.

The problem is that the IP address of http://<username>.plus.com you were trying to access is that of your Internet connection, ie your router, and that asked you to login.

What you need to do with the Samsung browser is add www. in front of that domain name to make it http://www.<username>.plus.com as was used with the Firefox browser. That will take you to your webspace and display its index page. Smiley

Cheers for that. Everything is working.

I need to remember the basics!
