www on domain name

Hi there,

Just a couple of quick questions regarding hosting my domain name with plus.net. Apologies in advance if this makes no sense, I'm not very good with explaining this stuff. Smiley

1. Will the domain name work without the www. at the front? e.g. http://www.domain.com and http://domain.com should both be the same. Is this the case with plus.net?

2. Does http://domain.com (or www.domain.com) automatically redirect to http://www.myname.plus.com , or will http://domain.com/path/page.html stay as that URL rather than redirecting to http://www.myname.plus.com/path/page.html ?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks and happy new year! Cheesy

www on domain name

Hi! Welcome to the forums. Smiley

1. In one word: "yes"!

2. When you go to www.domain.com, no matter where you go in that site, the address in your browser's address bar will always show the page you're at in the context of www.domain.com, rather than www.username.plus.com. This also applies if you set www.domain.com to be hosted from a folder inside your PlusNet webspace (i.e. www.domain.com = www.username.plus.com/hosted/website, and www.domain.com/stuff = www.username.plus.com/hosted/website/stuff).

I hope that makes sense. Cheesy

i'm wondering whether i can set my registered and hosted domain (aoffun.com) so that both http://www.aoffun.com and http://aoffun.com go to my cgi webspace (i understand this may not be easy seeing as plusnet would have to set up criticalmass to host that name as well i guess

I'm not sure this can be done from the the portal domain controls, but it can be done by PlusNet.

aoffun: My domain (which points to the CGI space) works as http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com - if you on link:contact us there is a path which gives you that option.

If you have had rDNS pointed to your domain name, this will not work.

When rDNS is setup, they first set a PTR record for your IP to the correcsponding hostname.

You then setup an A record pointing to your IP.

However, the internal A record for your domain still exists. This means it is pointing to both your static IP and regd.plus.net.

This will cuase some connections to time out, depending which DNS record the browser shooses to use.

thanks all - quite helpful

and i like the random avatar acarr - nice idea

[edit]
plusnet have done it again: they've been quick and useful - can now access my site at the ever so slightly shorter address of http://aoffun.com

Hi,

So I don't have to a) spend hours looking; or b) bother PlusNet with another support ticket; could someone tell me (or find the link?) how to get the CGI webspace mapped to my domain name? I don't much like the prospect of having http://cgi.domain.com when just http://domain.com would work. Smiley

Thanks. Cheesy

I'm fairly certain that for that operation you do need to raise a ticket
