confused about the speeds

hi
i know that the speeds are up and down with the new upgrade but im using your supplied voyager 105 that states that im connected at a steady 6.4 mbps, but the speed test on here with the firewall down is showing 1.87 mbps can someone please explain why such a large difference this test was carried out on the11/6/06 at 11pm,i also done another on the 12/6/06 at 10.30 am to get a better spred overall and this came in at 3808 mbps with the voyager 105 showing 6.5mbps also better add that i live in small village only a 100 yards from the exchange

thanks binzy

confused about the speeds

You need to look and see what your Max Stable Rate is.
This is more relevant than your sync speed.

If you read other threads on the forum, you will see that speed tests are not a reliable guide, with many other factors such as congestion at various times of day coming into play.

So even if your Max Stable Rate is 6Mb, you're unlikely to achieve that most of the time.

hi gpattison

thanks for reply i clicked your link to max stable rate and it shows 6000kbps with voyager showing 6.5 and as i stated i live in a small welsh village and 100 yards from exchange so hardly likely to be over streched with the small village population cant get near the 6000 kbps was wondering if the voyager as stated in other posts is not up to it and needs replacing as my brousing speeds are slower now than they have ever been.and before you ask i have plenty of cover so no infected computer here slowing things down

cheers binzy

So they key figure is the 6Mb, not the 6.5 that it's synching at.

My stable rate is 5.5 and i've managed 4.5 on occasion in speed tests. They all seem to report the same speed, whichever test I use, if I do them very close together.

However, on some evenings, I achieve under 1Mb, so clearly congestion on either BT's or Plusnet's network would probably be the culprit.

I wouldn't expect you necessarily to reach 6, but I'd have thought you would occasionally push 5Mb with everything set up right.

It may simply be your router, or it may be the settings that are slowing you down.

There is lots of guff on the forum about MTU and RWIN mattering, though they've never made a bit of difference when I've changed them.

It may be worth a try - look at this guide on Kitz's site which tells you how to do it.

hi gpattison

thanks for your excellent help tried the tweeks but cant see that much difference as yourself but at least i tried these are my last couple of test here but roughly the same when tested elsewhere,so dont think im going to get near the sync at 6.5 or the max stable rate of 6000 speeds
