Viewing JPG graphics in Internet Explorer

I am having difficulty viewing *.jpg files in IE 6 for no apparent reason, and wonder if anyone can cast light on what is going wrong - this is a relatively new problem, which makes me wonder whether it is my system or whether it is a real graphics problem.

I have taken digital photos at 1280 x 960 resolution and then reduced them to 640 x 480. When I view the photos then in ordinary graphics software, they view just as one would wish with no loss of resolution. However, as soon as I write html code to view exactly the same photographs in IE 6, the resolution goes all wrong and they become very grainy. It is evidently an IE 6 problem, because viewed in any graphics software, they are fine.

The basic code I have used is "<img width="640" height="480" src="test.jpg">. I have also tried using the simpler version "<img src="test.jpg">".

Is it me or is it me ? Any comments would be appreciated.

What size is your IE6 window at? If IE6 encounters a large image, it rescales it to fit in browser window, and a "Picture Toolbar" appears if you hover over it.

Try this registry tweak :
Hkey / Current User / Software / Microsoft / Internet Explorer
Click on folder 'Main'
Look in right hand column for DWord : 'UseHR'
check that value is set to: 0
Note; this value is usually found in high resolution
systems using higher than 96dpi settings,So may not apply.
Another thing to try, is in Internet Options- Advanced - Multi Media
untick the box 'enable automatic image resizing'

Thanks for the tips. I have tried them but to no avail. The problem has something to do with IE settings, because I have tried another machine and do not get the same problem with the same files at all.

My system is a docked laptop. I get the same problem irrespective of whether I use the laptop built-in monitor or my 19inch external monitor. It is quite wierd.

Do you have "Smart image dithering" enabled or disabled in the "Advanced" tab of IE?

Viewing JPG graphics in Internet Explorer

I have found another piece of the jigsaw and wonder whether this could be a clue to what is going wrong.

I have been using photographs with resolution taken at 1280 x 960. Using the software which came with the camera, which is Photo-impact from Ulead, I have then been reducing the jpg files to 640 x 480 using the tool under Format > Dimensions.

When viewed in any normal graphics software, the photos with the smaller resolution view perfectly well; no problems at all. It is only when I view them in Internet Explorer 6 that they become blotchy, almost as if IE6 has difficulties reading the modified photos, even when I tell it to display 640 x 480 (<img width="640" height="480" src="test.jpg>").

So IE6 does not appear to like the reduction in file size for some reason. If I use original photos taken with a resolution of 640 x 480 in the first place, there is no problem with IE6. But this problem only seems to exist on my main hardware, not on other systems. It is all very strange.

Does this mean anything to anyone ? I know jpg files are "lossy" and do loose some definition whenever they are saved / modofied and I don't know whether that has something to do with it.

How else can I reduce the file size for ftp purposes. If I use the original 1280 x 960 resolution, they take forever to download from a webpage.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

I think I have cracked it !!

Somehow, my display settings had got changed inadvertently !! They had re-set to 16 bit instead of 24 bit. I don't know how that happened but as I travel with the laptop, perhaps I used it on a strange monitor somewhere, and changed the settings and never changed back again.

Anyway, the difference is huge and sorry to send you on a wild goose chase. Thanks for tryinmg to help. Smiley
