nothing - there are ways around all the "protect you kids" programs.. proxies / chache / temp files and all that...

allow them to view what they want , when they want.. just check the history / temp files every so often on your computer and if you see them lookin at a site that you do not think is "appropriate" talk to them.. dont just block it.

There is no way to stop some one from doing what they want if they really want to do it, so if your kid is male... he will look at porn.. there is no question about it, its all part of the growing up stage in their lives and stuff.... Just talk to them if you dont want them to look at that kinda stuff.

allow them to roam... they may learn somthing new.

I suggest you set up your host file to block the numerous spyware and hijackers that are associated with porn sites.

Go here and download their hosts file http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm#Attention

Once your familiar with the host file you can add webaddress's gleaned from the IE history after your children have been surfing.

removing the lame popups and spyware i agree with, make sure you run Lavasofts adaware and / or spybot search and destroy to remove this crud..

also :

if you know how, set up the childerns own accounts and then:

1) remove Internet explorer and make them run firefox.. easy nice and safe
2) remove their rights to run exe files.. stops lame virii

Spybot search & destroy has a hosts file option to put known spyware/malware sites in to block access. It does not deal with adult sites.

Also IE-SPYAD & AGNIS has both spyware and adult site lists that can be used to block access - IE_SPYAD only works with the IE browser because it uses it's blocking list mechanism. AGNIS contains block lists for Norton internet security and Norton Personal Firewall if you use those firewall tools.

Both are updated frequently and information on new updates for both can be found in the news.grc.com news server under the latestversions group.

why stop what the kids what to do.. its not a "bad" thing for them to do what ever they want online.. i dout they will be "hax0ring their way to stealing Ub3r Credit Card numbers"

and if they really want to look at porn.. there are SO many ways around every kind of filter...

most.. just ban say "www.porn.com" but if u go to www.216.130.216.214.com it wouldnt stop it as there is no "offensive" content in that URL even though its www.porn.com.

also, bable fish will get around most of these filters as it is a web based proxy..

Just care about what they may download / run as it could inconvieniace you more than knowing your child is looking at porn.

Your first best action, would be to keep any eye on your children when they are on-line, not over the the top but just check every now and again.

If you have a router, you maybe be able to ban certain words, it's not full proof as you've already seen, but it can work.

I would also check out IE-SPYAD & AGNIS as previously mentioned by petervaughan

A lot depends on the age of your children and how technically savy they are with computers and the web.

If I had children my main worry would be chat rooms.

maybe, take a few mins and talk to them? especialy about chat rooms, explain that they do NOT know who is on the other end and who some one could be miss leading them.. also make sure they know NEVER to give away personal information such as their mobile / home number or address.

this way you will hopefully be able to leave them to it, and be happy knowing that they have enough know how not get into trouble.

The internet is not a safe place to leave children alone, it doesn't matter how much to you tell them what to do, and what not to do.

well its a learning experiance... you cant sheild them all the time.. personaly id rather have them talk to a pedo online that go out and get pissed every night.. cos at teh end of the day the pedo cant do anything apart from say stuf..... but the drink could kill them.

You only to look a recent news events relating to children and net, to know what problems have arisen when adults talk to children in chat rooms.

enough said I think.

yea.. but those kids were fools, you cant hurt some one with text.. and if it starts getting "abbusive"

/ignore nick@ident <--irc
BLOCK <--msn / yahoo / AIM

and even...

X <-- oh look i closed the windwo

so overall if the kid gets upset its THEIR FAULT!!! they have TOTAL controll over who they talk to and WHEN!! if they dont want to takl to some one they can just ignore them.. its not like the other person can beat them up.. cos THEY ARNT IN THE ROOM

And there lies an ignorant side to internet monitoring.

i remember when i was a young lad when my parent said dont go on porn sites and what not. But i still did cant stop them when they no about things

bleh?

why is it ignorant..

not knowing the age of the child they are concernd about means its hard to say what measures should be taken.

if they are under 8 then hey all they will ever do is look at cbeebies and cITV.. they neve need to know about irc or msn etc

if they are 8 - 10. they will understand stuff u tell em about not letting out information

10 up.. hey they ahve seen a few 15 movies, maybe the odd 18.. they know whats goin on in this world so let them do what they want

if you really want to stop some one using the internet in ways u dont want them to, you need a router to block outgoin connections to irc servers (6667) and to msn.. (dunno port..lazzy to look it up) etc...

that way you can be sure they wont be able to connect to them with out the use of a proxy.. but if they know what one of those is,. your d00med

also.. filters suck. only today i went to a site that had xxx in the title.. but it wasnt porn it was a download link to a free ms trial

it was somthing ilke www.microsoft.com/40fxxx9faas/bleh

that.. would have been banned from a lot of filters due to the "xxx" .. also a lot of links have xxx in them just cos..

so yea, your filters would have to be very precise so not to get in the way of normal surfing....

also, some times a child is to embaressed to ask their perants for advice and go online to look for it,... say "safe sex" or "first time sex" etc... now how can a child learn like this if they google that and get "this site has been blocked due to some lame filter"

I can see the views on pedo's and stuff being a major concern but surly a small talk with them will give them the understanding of what to do if they come across one.
