SPYBOT removed

I just uninstalled SPYBOT. The reason is that at the end of August they
removed entries from the register which controlled the working of my Norton
Internet Security/ Antivirus then two weeks ago compounded it by trying to
hide the evidence by removing the warning flags about it being put out by
the Microsoft Security Centre. I cant trust them anymore so I have removed
SPYBOT.

I did try the SPYBOT Recover and System Restore but these werent any good so
I had to do a full uninstall/reinstall of my complete Norton software. Not
surprisingly this only worked at the third attempt and took about five
hours. I couldnt do it earlier cos I needed my CD drive and this was out of
action for over a month mainly cos of an inept PCWorld engineer.

I am now waiting to see if Symantec will try and charge me for this new
installation of 2003 software.

Just out of asking, why would they do that?

spybot like any other anti-spyware tool can damage your setup at times, although I've never heard of it causing the damage you've described before. If you running XP, why did you not try returning to previous restore point? just before it deleted the entries.

I notice that Symantec have changed my subscription to today, 2006, so I was wondering.

Regarding System Restore I naturally tried that. The reinstall was my only hope and worked at the third attempt.

When you first set NIS to work you get 1 year automatic, which makes me think that you have been supplied a cracked / bootleg copy. If when you reinstall you get a fresh year of subscription then something is not quite right.

NIS 2003? the time that must take for downloading all the up dates is scary. Have a look at some of the newer security systems which should have better resistance and detection abilities. Nortons is very good but tries to control everything to its standard plus uses a lot of power to do it. You could try some of the free ones like AVAST antivirus and SYGATE firewall.
