SMTP Advice

I am intending shortly to migrate my Mail Server to SMTP.

My understanding is that as soon as PlusNet's mail server(s) have mail for me, they will submit it to the IP Address I have designated from my block for my Mail Server.

Reading these forums however, I see that some users onl y seem to get their SMTP mail when they issue a finger command.

What is the experience of users? Does SMTP indeed arrive without the need for issuing a finger (except following a service outage) or do lot of you have "at" jobs running every minute to give autoturn the finger :?:
Cheers

Keith

Hi Keith,

I have moved this to a more relevant forum where hopefully the right people will respond.

If your mail server is configured correctly and has access to all the relevant ports then you only have to run the "finger" command if your mailserver has been down for any reason. The main reason people have to do this is incorrect server config or incorrect firewall config.

Move was OK, wherever I get the best response.

Ports: I'm assuming that 25 & 110 (for POP clients) are all that should be required?
