Is it necessary to have both router firewall and software firewall up and running, thats if the router firewall is setup correctly?

Software firewall’s are great at telling which programs are connecting to the internet, and giving you the option to stop them. Whereas hardware firewall tend to allow all outgoing connections.

Also if your router is wireless, then a software firewall will prevent undesired connections from the wireless network.

I echo chilly comments, and to add it's worth having both firewalls.

Hardware firewalls are not application specific and won't control what applications are actually run on your PC, where as most software ones will (on windows anyway).

so what is the real point of having the router firewall, it seems like the software firewall can do everything the router firewall can do plus a lot more. If anything, it seems like the the router firewall causes more problems than its worth?

Router's firewalls are far more secure, since they are within an enclosed environment. They are far less likely to be damaged, bypassed etc.

they also take the load of the OS when dealing with an attack - no CPU 100% usage etc.

Also they have far more powerfull rule sets that are not compromised by XP // Linux exploits that may kill a software firewall -- unless of course you have a cisco router at the moment Shockedops:

Fundamentally, the hardware firewall stops intrusions into your home network, but what is cannot prevent is someone on that network from downloading nasties. Should they do so, hopefully, the software firewalls on each pc will stop cross fertilisation, and also, in some cases, detect unauthorised outbound traffic from downloaded nasties.

Prior to using a router/modem for my BB connection, my software firewall was logging alerts all the time, but now it hardly sees anything because the router takes care of them.

The software firewall, in this case Zonealarm Pro, is really for outgoing traffic now.
