Restore point turned off not by me query trojan/virus

I have taken the possably affected pc off line until I get to the bottom of this and hope someone can help.

Tonight my main pc started to behave oddly.

First On selecting any desktop icon to run a program I repeatedly goth a messages asking if I wished to run explore ** times. Not explorer not the name of the program picked but explore.

Second my pc played a three tone tune each tone higher than the previous.

Third I went to try system restore to be told it was turned off.

I do not remember turning it off. I have never had a tune from the pc speaker and have never managed to run explore ** times.

Spybot fins nothing AVG antivirus up to date Zone alarms finds nothing either?

The problem is with my main machine and so is quite importatnt to sort.

All help gratefully recieved.

To be honest Alan I haven't got much experience when it comes to virus infection etc.
I run from a limited user account, with AV, firewall, etc. So I don't know really what the best methods are. However I reckon it can't hurt for you to have a look at what processes are running, and then "google" for them on your other pc, to see what they pertain to!

Alt+Ctrl+Del > Processes tab.

If you find a nasty, and can't find conclusive instructions for removal, then post here and see if others have experience of removing that specific nasty! Wink

The PC Boots no problem and having deleted most of my desktop shortcuts I no longer have the message appearing re: opening explore XX times. The pc speaker has also not sounded again. The room was quite warm so it might be the m/b letting me know it was getting warm.

Oh! :?
Did you at least take a look if there were any unknown processes running?
I agree you could expect an alarm from the pc speaker if cpu got to/above temp settings in bios, but it wouldn't turn off you system restore eh? :!:

Anyhow, I hope that is all it was Alan! GL Wink

I would have thought it would have been the other way around with system restore- that is where some virus's hide!
When you delete them they are backed up in restore!
The first thing to do when removing virus' is turn off restore do whatever has to be done and then turn back on.

I have seen something similar with the serflog virus, do you use msn?
There is a fix, http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FixSflog.exe
If I remember rightly I had to download it into my documents because it wouldn't let me open it from the desktop.
Seriously I would run Trend micros Housecall and use all 3 scanners.

I have some basic tips on on the virus tips pages.
