Plusnet AV

Tried sending tp21.exe to another plusnet user last night as an email attachement (they we on as usb modem with win98 and no firewall) and it just comes back saying

Our virus checker found
banned filename: application/x-msdownload
in your email to the following recipient:
-> scary@xxxxxxx.plus.com

This mail was therefore intercepted before delivery.

I then changed the extension to "doc" and it went then is there a way around this as I'll now have to explain how to rename the file

A couple of suggestions;

1. Upload it to your webspace and send them link to it.

2. zip it, but this often fails as the virus scanners open zipped files to check for executables.

3. Use WinZip or other zip program to “UU” encode the file, this basically converts the file to 7bit plain printable text. Virus scanners will normally leave these files alone. Once received, providing your fiend has WinZip or other zip program they just have to open the file and it will be converted back to an “exe” file.

As part of my work I regularly have to send “exe” files to customers in the nhs, but there e-mail security will not allow them, so I use the “UU” trick all the time without problems.
