Password protect without username

Is it possible to use .htpasswrd or something like that to password protect a directory but without requiring the user to enter a username?

No, passwords are associated with a username and actually require the username in order to be generated.

If you are going to give out the password, why not just include a username as well.

It's fine, I could even give the username in the prompt if necessary - it's just a situation where all the users will anyway know the password already so it would be easier if I could avoid giving out a username. Thanks for the response!
