NASA World Wind

See the world through the eyes on an America satellite.

Quote
World Wind lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth. Leveraging Landsat satellite imagery and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data, World Wind lets you experience Earth terrain in visually rich 3D, just as if you were really there.

Virtually visit any place in the world. Look across the Andes, into the Grand Canyon, over the Alps, or along the African Sahara.

This is cool! My colleague could pick out the house he lived in whilst in San Francisco! The data outside the USA is much lower resolution, as you might expect.

If you can stomach the big download it is worth the effort, and its free!

Data in the UK is becoming high res now.

Google are now providing what sat imagry they have available. The link above is of Southport.

Google use free or low cost sources for data, using every which way they can to get hold of it, without paying the normal people.

Unfortunatly, it looks like much of the photo imagry is goign to be limited to club running out of local airfields.

The US imagry is far from complete either. I understand they may have only as such data as we do, per sqyare mile.

Wow, they're really working hard.

(When it refreshed, there was no change!)

Love both of the world ones though, it'll be better once they have got round to photo'ing the rest of the world.

No they are modern housing units  , or was your reference to the steel spike fencing that is a hang over from the factory that was behind.

The prisons are a few miles in the other direction.
