MP3 Converting software

I know there are lots out there but can anyone recommend some 'free' software to convert audio files to mp3?
I would like to be able to rip a track from a cd (which i currently do in media player to play on my pc) convert to mp3 so that they can be used as a ringtone.
Thanks in advance. Smiley

Thanks, however windows media player appears to require an mp3 encoder to be installed which you have to pay for (despite microsoft stating mp3 encoding support is included at no cost with Windows Media Player 10) :?

Get a copy of Audacity from http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

You will also need to download an encoder dll (LAME MP3 encoder - there's a link on the web site).

Best of all - It's all free! and is available for Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP or later, Mac and Linux.

From the web-site -
