Which distro? Most have a nice little "wizard" or control panel to help set these things up. On RedHat Linux you just enter the phone number and your username/password and click "connect."

I've not had to bother with login scripts since I used Slackware in 1994...

Kopite1,
I am very displeased that you've taken it upon yourself to start three threads about this. As such, I am providing a link to the other thread containing a reply (which will subsequently be locked), and I'm deleting the thread without a reply .

I had started one thread in the computer/hardware forum and noone knew there.

I have been trying to get advice ont his from plus net themselves who ahve been really unhelpful. They told me to open a post in the cgi script forum which someone moved without me being advised.

The forums are read as a whole, so you're just as likely to get an answer in the Computers + Hardware forum as you are in any other forum.

When the PlusNet CSR told you to open a thread in the CGI forum, they probably didn't know that you already had a thread open.

Back to the question, have you looked (and then asked) on www.linuxquestions.org?

YeS I`ve asked on linuxquestions.org and justlinux.org. Everywhere I`ve asked have said that the isp should be able to give tme the details on the login script

Have you followed the instructions suggested by "dd78749" here?

The DNS server addresses (which he said you may have to enter) are:
212.159.13.49 and 212.159.13.50.

Done that I did that as soon as it was suggested still no joy.

Maybe a reply to that forum would be in order then Wink

In all honesty, you're going to get better help on there as the problem is linux-related, and that is a forum which specialises in linux. That said, there may be a few linux gurus lurking on this forum, who knows!

I think Plus.Net are well within their rights to be "unhelpful" as there's nothing wrong with their service, just your setup.

Talking of which, you've not really provided us with much information. What happens when you click "Connect"? Does your modem dial? What settings have you entered? Can you ping Plus.Net servers? By name or just by IP address? Have you looked in /var/log/messages? Anything 'interesting' in there?

Also, there are dozens of tools available that help setup PPP connections (several of which probably come with Slackware). Maybe you should try something other than kppp? I wasn't impressed when I used kppp years ago (might be better now, though). I'd also consider switch distro. Slackware isn't the most user-friendly.

When I connect it says starting pppd then times out. if I put details int he login script then things happen but It wotn connect. I need to know what settings to put in for the login script.

Other than connecting to the internet Slackware has been fine.

Have you gone through the Linux HOWTOs? The PPP-HOWTO or Modem-HOWTO may help you.

"Things happen" isn't terribly useful. Does the modem dial? What does it say in /var/log/messages? Linux provides very detailed diagnostics, arguably too much in many cases, but you're giving far too little information for anyone to be able to help.

I found some instructions for configuring kppphere and there's no mention of a "login script." As mentioned before, the phone number, your username, password and IP addresses of the DNS servers are all you need.

Heres what happens in full.

I click connect. The modem seems to initialize and the number is rang. The normal beeps and screeches are heard as is normal for connection then the message changes in the log to starting pppd. It times out then.

I have increased the Timeout level, HAve added the dns server entries both the ones suggested earlier and the ones for connect users. still no joy.

I check the var/log/messages and it says taht it terminates on status 15. I havent got a clue what that means or were to find out the info about it.

As I said I`m a new user to linux so it might as well be in chinese.
