Andy, I think you need to reconsider your last statement, since sygate has been brought out by symantec.

Well gadgetboy, what are you going to use? Zone Alarm? Sygate? Outpost? or do you pay?

I'm currently trialling the latest version of Zone Alarm Pro, and it seems good, but I'm slightly put off by the cost. Normally I use Jetico.

Is it good? is it free?

Jetico is free and it's very good, but and there is always a but, it depends on how comfortable you are with firewall rules.

Jetico creates expert rules for ever application, and thus it's much more involved that many other firewalls. You can just say I want to allow all for a particular application, but it's often better to control it with detailed rules.

If that doesn't sound your cup of tea, then there are some other good free firewalls I can recommend.

How old can it be? Anyone know where you can get an ISA network card?

What are the specs on your PC? OpenBSD / Linux can run on many machines so it's a good way to use old machines.

However if your already connected via a router, then for most people this will provide enough protection.

Finally configuring linux firewalls is more tricky since you need to know the actual ports and rules you want to add but if your comfortable with that, then they are very secure.

i have 2 isa network 10mbit cards if you want them Wink

you can run openbsd and iptables on a 200mghz box if you want with 16meg ram and it will be fine
