FTP access to FrontPage area

Although I have been using my webspace for a while now, I have never been able to use an FTP client to access my FrontPage area. Sad

I use WSFTP Pro and it says:
Quote
WINSOCK.DLL: WinSock 2.0
WS_FTP Pro, Version 7.62, 2002.12.18
Finding Host fp.username.plus.com ...
Connecting to X.X.X.X:21
Connect failure

I can normally use Explorer to access it, but it seems a bit strange that I can FTP to my normal & cgi webspace, but not fp. :?

Whether it is done in passive mode or not doesn't make any difference. I have also tried CuteFTP in vain.

Thanks Smiley

Should it be possible to FTP to the FrontPage space?

FTP access to FrontPage area

I very much doubt it... if you FTP to FrontPage based sites, using FP Extensions etc. you can break it...

Thanks Colin

Oh, OK Colin - thanks Wink

Just wondered if it was something wrong with my setup or the method I was using. If FTP access is blocked for the FrontPage area, for all users, then I don't need to feel left out anymore!

Frontpage uses a specific port that is not the same as FTP standard.
As mentioned, the fp server is intended to be used with the frontpage software and extensions. Attempting to upload using FTP could mess up your site.

Thank you for re-emphasising that Smiley

I know it's not a big deal (I can use Explorer most of the time) but, both of you say

Why would it mess it up - is the FP area so different from the others then? Is it not able to interpret the FTP protocol or what exactly? :?

I've never seen this mentioned before - is it in the documentation? It seems rather odd.

They are two totaly different protocols.

It is the same as asking, will a web-browser, talk to a POP3 server. Not directly it won't.

FP uses specialist commands, designed for setting up the certain aspects of a FP site and the extentions.

Thanks, acarr - so is it OK to use Explorer, or is FrontPage the only way to deal with it?

Explorer should work fine as FrontPage should interact with it when its installed (and possibly even when its not)

You should only use frontpage.

In addition to what Philip says, there are also lots of admin info about pages within your FP website stored locally on your webspace when you upload files via FP. If you replace files outside of FP then the admin info will be out of date and could cause problems if you subsequently try to replace or replicate those pages via FP.

FP is very fussy about files being messed about with outside of it's control. There could also be security implications as FP uses it's own secirity mechanisms to protect access to web pages.

This is one of the main reasosn why I and many others would not touch FP with a barge pole. It also means your website can only ever work on a FP supported web server so your limited to where you could move to (if you ever decided to). Wheras standard HTML should run on vertially all web servers. But don't let my comments stop you using it, many people still do.
