Domain names and plus net generic domain urls

I've just read the Tutrial : Domains: Setting up Domain Records with interest.

My question is: can the existing www.mydomain.plus.com be used instead of a registered domain name. I want to experiment with my 180 day evauation copy of Win 2003 server with asp and later .net but only until the licence runs out Wink

Thanx

Just use
tiamaria.plus.com
which resolves to your router.

Thanks for your reply, but this resolves to the plus.net domain space not my local computer.

The tutorial gives advice about resetting the domain name to point to a home computer - but this is not available on my account as I haven't registered any Domain names - I just get a blank listing.

I want to re-direct my url to my computer and run asp.

Do I have to register a domain name first or can I redirect the tiamaria.plus.com to my computer?

Any ideas

tiamaria.plus.com should resolve to your PlusNet assigned IP address and it looks like it does:

C:\Documents and Settings\Peter>ping www.tiamaria.plus.com

Thanks both for your replies.

I bet I'm missing something really simple here but it still won't work Cry

My Static IP address resolves to my router (Internet)...

My local machine has a static IP address...

When I type my local machine IP address in a browser I get my website (running locally)...

At my router I've setup port forwarding on port 80 and 2442 to my local machine IP address

When testing http://tiamaria.plus.com and http://tiamaria.plus.com:2442 I get the 'The page cannot be displayed' error page (The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.) This also happens when my firewall is turned off

HuhHuh? Cry

Your website is working fine.

What you cannot do is use your PlusNet IP or URL address from your local network because your router will get confused and not know where to route the connection to and thus throws up a page nt found error.

You have to access your URL from an external server on the internet. Put your URL into here and it should work. Note: you can't use anything other than port 80 on that site.

If you still want to access your website using your plusnet URL add the following entry to your hosts file:

192.168.0.2 tiamaria.plus.com

where the IP address is that of your web server.

Doh - as simple as that...

Thanks again - that great... it was almost a very long unhappy weekend
