Difference between http and https?

This question follows on from thread "Customer Feedback - My Referrals Banners Code - Errors" that I raised.

I was failing to get the PlusNet banners displayed when the address was http://......... however when I changed that to https://.......... they did display. It was found that the problem was that I had Norton Security set to Ad Bocking.

This got me thinking what is the difference between http and https, also if I alter the banner address to https does that circumnavigate Ad Blocking? If it does is it right to do so?

TIA

John

In simple terms http is the normal web traffic and https is a secure access. Norton may see https as being secure and not bother to block things the same.

If you use https:// for the image URL people using Internet Explorer may get "Mixed Content" popups.
