Creating software VPN Connections

I'm investigating options on how to create a VPN connection to my home network.

I'm using the guides located here:
creating a VPN Server
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn_server.htm

Creating a VPN CLient connection
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/networking/xp_vpn.htm

Should I be able to create this configuration using Windows XP only?
(I can create the connection on my my windows xp machine OK, but it fails at the client when I try to connect.)
I've set the client to use PPTP as a get error message about missing machine license when I try to use LP2P ow whatever it;s called)

Are there any other options for creating software VPN connections that are recommendible?

Thanks
Ian.

First off why do you want a vpn? Can you use Remote desktop which is a lot simpler to setup?

You dont say how your pc and home network connect to the internet do they use a router or modem. If its a router have you forwarded the ports as described in the tutor?

Windows vpn ofen wont work as a lot of routers wont forwarded it correctly.

Try the free hamachi

I did some research after posting, and have reached the same conclusion that Hamachi offers exactly what I need.

BTW - The reason for wanting VPN is not for remote desktop - I actually need to secure the link between 2 home networks for file transfer, and this method is cheaper than buying FTP client/server that support security.

I also came across OpenVPN http://openvpn.net/ that looks like it could do what I need - but not as simply as Hamachi.

Thanks for replying.

Ian.
