Breaking connection in OE

On the 29th I downloaded the DirectX fix from Windows Update. Then a couple
of days later the dialup problem was fixed by PlusNet rebooting the disk
rack. I had been getting the dialup problem and also a loss of connection on
leaving the keyboard idle for a minute or two. PlusNet's reboot fixed the
dialup problem but the connection breaks continue and are annoying. I think
it must be down to the DirectX fix which has speeded up termination of
access to websites. I wondered if anybody knew how I could go into DirectX
and lengthen the time before cutoff occurs. It is most annoying to have to
redial and I am wondering what will happen on a lengthy download.

Press Start, select Run, Type in DXDIAG.

A window will pop up with various tests for each different element of direct x

perform each test and it'll tell you if something is wrong and give advice on how to resolve it.

Many thanks. I finished up at the Microsoft Information Tool where I found that the idle time cutpoint is set at 20 minutes. So I am baffled. The connection is breaking within a minute.

As DirectX was clean the only other thing I can think of is that I installed Spybot and Adaware to run in tandem and perhaps I have deleted a vital cookie. Would a System Restore be in order?

System Restore wouldnt be too sensible cos I would lose two packages I succesfully downloaded after running Spybot/Adaware then installing the DirectX Update. I paid for the packages. I think the problem lies in DirectX but I can live with it at present.

I have been doing some testing. On the Web, on USENET, and at PlusNet. The problem cant be anything to do with timing out (or else it has gone away). The connections were still there after 5 minutes. Very puzzling.

PS that was five inactive minutes.

And similarly I cant reproduce the bug when replying to posts/emails in OE. Perhaps it has gone away.

Thanks John. It is beginning to look like one of those things. Perhaps tied up with the PLusNet disk rack problem which was discussed in customer-feedback newsgroup.

The bug remains. My latest thinking is that it is due to interaction between MailWasher and OE, to which the DirectX fix has been applied. With SP 2 due in the near future we''ll have to wait and see what happens. I wonder if this is the reason that Nick Bolton has produced a new version of MailWasher that costs hard cash.

Not sure on that none
I run Mailwasher on XP but am using ADSL so perhaps a bit different to you.
I seem to have no problems with it in its present form.
Have you tried taking Mailwasher out of the equasion and seeing what happens without it?

First thing is That I am assured from the logs that there is no interaction between Mailwasher and beta SP2.

Second thing is that the connection broke sending this reply so I dont think Mailwasher can be involved.

Baffling. First time I got three minutes, now I have had 6.
