Is it an accepted fact of URL life that using 'masked domain forwarding' will render SSL useless?

I have a .co.uk domain registered with 1and1.co.uk and they use masked forwarding in a frame which I have tried pointing at sites on some freehosting I have, including my free space here at PN.
Thr trouble is that any link from that site to an SSL site comes up as 'http' and not 'https' rendering the security aspect useless.
An enquiry to 1and1 eventually yielded their only answer was to use 'unmasked forwarding' which works but in turn renders the advantage of masking as useless.

Am I missing something here? I can't seem to find mention of the subject anywhere, despite much searching, and so I am now unsure where the problem is, let alone the answer!

Unfortunately yes, masked URL's interfere with SSL which as you've found out, renders it useless (being a 1&1 customer, I also found this out the hard way).

Many thanks for that.

The next step then seems to be the DNS 'A Record' which they allow to be changed.
I am a DNS novice at the moment. Have read quite a few tutorials but I still can't get it completely.

Is it the case that I can re-direct just by entering an IP address as a fresh A record or are there other steps involved?

If so, how would I get the IP address required?
I have tried looking up a free address ( for example: www.user.plus.com ) at www.dnsstuff.com but it gives the address as being a CNAME of homepages.plus.net.
If I were to put this in, would it get me to the 'user' subdomain?

Also, can I re-direct the A record and leave the MX records as they are with no side effects?

Any help on this is very much appreciated. All I really want to do is direct my .co.uk domain name to my home page. Have my domain name shown in the address bar and be able to link to an SSL page with the padlock and security message shown.

Thanks.

You need to point your domain to the PlusNet NS (Name Server) records for your webspace (you can get these from PlusNet).

With regard to getting the IP address, this can be achieved by using the following;

http://arul.telenet-systems.com/hostname2ip.html

or via the CMD box (Start > Run, type: cmd) using nslookup, ping or whois or tracert (any of them will return the IP for you)

Your other option would be to transfer your 1&1 domain name away from them to Plusnet giving you control via the Plusnet domains system...
