BBCs Climate Change experiement

Valentines Day saw the launch of the BBC running the climate change experiement (this programme has been running for over 2 years however the BBC are taking part now): it uses distributed computing in the form of BOINC

You can find out all about it here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/hottopics/climatechange/
and http://www.climateprediction.net

If you want to take part I have set up the plusnetters team so first sign up at http://bbc.cpdn.org/create_account_form.php?teamid=79 to join the team

Download the program from: http://bbc.cpdn.org/index.php
if you need any help or support for the programme then click here

when it asks you to create an account press the already have an account button and enter your details that you signed up with on the above link then you just leave it to it!

As the project has just begun its been very busy and the servers occasionally timeout when you sign up so if it comes up unable to attact to the project then jut close the program and try again!

It's not new or a BBC experiment, the project has been running for well over 2 years. All the BBC is doing is promoting it.

The related message board can be found here so if you have any problems with installing / running it, I suggest you visit there for help.

Ok, I've signed up. It might be a while before I finish a unit though. It's running on my linux install but I've only been able to get it to work when running as root and I don't often log in to root so I will probably forget to fire it up a lot of times.

But hey every little helps eh. Wink

We're only in 58th place just now. We need a few more people joining up to the team if we're to get into the top 10. How about the CS reps installing it on their PC's at work. Wink

(yes this is a shameless bump)

This is important work, so please join in. Bear in mind, however, that your PC will not be working on small regular chunks of data. It downloads an entire climate model and then sits there modelling the whole planet by itself. I have a fast PC here at work running 8 hours a day and it tells me it is going to take about a year to finish  . if you have a home PC (like mine) that is only running for short periods it would decades to finish, so is not worth the effort.
