Automated PAssword Generation

I have done a search here but maybe my search criteria wasn't good enough as I came up with nothing.

I am looking for a way to automate password generation for members to my website. Initially this will be a free membership with possible subscription rates added in the near future.

At present I can be emailed and I generate a password myself and email it back which means a wait for the prospective member.

Any help or links would be appreciated.

Cheers

This may not be too helpful but with ASP .Net 2.0, site registration, passwords, membership and roles are all catered for. Unfortunately Plusnet doesn't support ASP .Net and you would need an alternative web host.

The following URL will take you to a series of tutorials on MS Visual Web Developer Express (which is currently a free download). Amongst the tutorials is one entitled "Membership and Roles" which demonstrates the functionality.

Hi,

PHP would probably be the best way to do this on plus nets servers.

I find www.php.net a great resource. There as a lot of advice there. I did a quick search for generate password and found this short bit of php at http://uk2.php.net/manual/en/function.mt-rand.php

<?php
$acceptedChars = 'azertyuiopqsdfghjklmwxcvbnAZERTYUIOPQSDFGHJKLMWXCVBN0123456789';
$max = strlen($acceptedChars)-1;
$password = null;
for($i=0; $i < 8; $i++) {
$password .= $acceptedChars{mt_rand(0, $max)};
}
echo $password;
?>

or if you are happy for a password that is mostly numbers you may find the following works
<?php
echo substr(uniqid(''), -6);
?>

hope this helps

kind regards

Depending on your site's language (asp, PHP etc), I'd be happy to modify the one I wrote for my own site to suit you?;

I often use Plus net for passwords. If you type www.plus.net into the browser you get a nice random string after the address and its a nice way of getting a random string
