Are favicons supported??

Does anyone know if I am able to upload a favicon file to my /htdocs folder so my site has an icon associated with it in the address bar or when adding to favorites?

I've tried uploading favicon.ico to the htdocs folder but it doesn't appear to work.

favicon.ico should work without problems.

However, for best results, you should include a <link> tag in your HTML page.

Internet Explorer will not download the icons by default, only when you add it to the favourates. On top, clearing you cache will remove the icon.

The format of the tag is:

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/path/to/file/favicon.ico">

To see it in action, visit http://cgi.support.plus.com where it is in use as part of the template.

Cheers Phillip,

Even when adding to favorites in IE, it still doesn't appear to work. Not tried other browsers yet.

Is there any requirement as to where the link should go? Does it need to be within the head tags or anything like that?

I'm using dreamweaver templates so shouldn't be a problem to add it to all pages in one fell swoop.

Do I need to bear permissions in mind for the .ico file itself?

The icon should just be uploaded like any other file.

There are no permission considerations to worry about. The only thing you do need is to place ic somwhere publicly accesable.

IE, the htdocs folder as you have stated.

Yes, the link tag above should be in the <head> section.

The only problem I can think of here is down the fact there are disk access problems at this time.

Favicons are not reliable in my experience.
