unable to send emails via outlook, error message 550 relay denied

So, it sounds like whatever version of Outlook you have on there (which one?) has got itself confused.Which operating system do you have on the laptop - not W10 by any chance?

Can you copy and paste the full error message?

I have asked the mods to remove the 'fix'.

I'm using Outlook 2007 and W10, the message I get is:-

“the following recipient cannot be reached .......550 recipient rejected – relay denied”

That is all? - there is usually a little more detail in rejection messages, which you may think unimportant, but helps others to understand a bit more.

I was a little worried you were using the version of O/L shipped with W10, but you're not, so that is one possible avenue of error closed.

The  typical message is :-

The following recipient(s) cannot be reached:

      'xxxx@xxx' on 24/02/2021 18:12

            550 <xxxx@xxx> recipient rejected - relay denied

where in this case the recipient was my own gmail address which works via my phone's email

OK Jane, that confirms it is something in or on your outgoing settings in O/L. Unfortunately, I haven't used any M$ mail program for 20+ years, so I can't really help - they have 'evolved' since I used the original 'Outlook Express'.

There are a couple of the 'Super Users' on here who might be able to debug it for you - I'll tag the one I know who is currently around.

@MisterW  - any thoughts, cos I'm useless on this one?

OK, @MisterW , just thought you knew more than me - we obviously need the other regular contributor to this board.

@JaneC1 More thoughts while my brain is feeling young - How many email addresses do you have, and could you post whatever settings pages you have - it is easier to analyse possible problems if we have them in black and white, rather than a 'description'?

'The only thing I can see in there is your outgoing port which should be 587 not 25, but I don't think that is the problem - worth changing, though.

Sorry Jane, but until the SU that knows email much better than me logs in, I'm out of ideas. All those settings look OK to me, though.

Any ideas, @Townman , please?

@JaneC1  I'm not sure if this will work but try changing the settings in the last screenshot ( Advanced )

As @jab1 says , change the port to 587 but also check the 'This server requires an encrypted connection' box and select TLS on the dropdown for 'Use the following type of encrypted connection'.

thanks for your suggestions, so I've altered the settings and clicked on the "test account settings box" but that produced the same error message unfortunately so I've reverted to my original settings other than keeping the preferred port 587.

Hi @JaneC1, in the Outgoing Server tab try enabling the outgoing server requires authentication option using the same settings as the incoming server.
