setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

My old PC has failed, so need to set up email access on a laptop.

Using outlook express the email to**ey@globalnet will send but not receive. Outgoing setting used is smtpmail.globalnet.co.uk with port at 25. I am unsure of the incoming set at mail.globalnet.co.uk  port at 143. On the advanced setting neither incoming or outgoing requiring SSL are ticked  but and on the internet settings the require secure password access is not ticked. Could anyone advise if I am doing something wrong. It will send but checking for emails brings up the password dialogue box.....

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

@Punkieys17

A warm welcome to the forums.

The key bit of information you have not given is the type of inbound email client you are trying to configure - POP3 or IMAP.

POP3

  • Port 110 encryption - none
  • Port 995 encryption - TLS/SSL

IMAP

  • Port 143 encryption - none
  • Port 993 encryption - TLS/SSL

Out going SMTP: Port 587 without encryption or STARTTLS encryption

Are you actually getting an error on receiving ... or are you simply not seeing any inbound mail?  If there is no error reported and this is an IMAP configuration, try setting the IMAP root folder to inbox

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

@Townman

I am wondering if the OP is referring to the new Windows email Mail client rather than 'Outlook Express' which is obsolete.

This might help the OP

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

Hi, thanks to everyone for the comments. This is for setting up on an old Outlook..not Outlook Express. I can send emails including attachments but am seeing nothing in the in-box. Send and receive sees send work then receive ask for password. As i stated I do not have any encryption ticked for receive - should I? This is to set it up as imap as this will become my prime email account rather than being to just see emails

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

Also confused as the settings used for outbound (Port25 etc) is working without encryption.....yet the instructions says it should be encrypted

Tried to find how to set IMAP root folder tin inbox in outlook but cant see anything like the method suggested

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

Port 25 will work. It is though not the port for message submission, it’s the port for MX to MX relay. It will work both with and without encryption.

As for inbound if you are being prompted for a password then you have not made a successful connection to the server. How old is the outlook? Some of the old versions do not support the current encryption standards.

Try imap on port 143 with no encryption.

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

Thank you for the help. I have the incoming set to port 143 - does it need any security. I am trying to get this to work on a Outlook 2003. I cant afford to upgrade as I am unemployed and trying to use the laptop to send and receive messages about potential jobs.

Re: setting up globalnet imap on new computer - send OK but not receive

Outlook 2003 is most certainly not going to work with encryption.

There are several newer email clients which are free, from the rather naff winmail / new outlook which ships with Windows (what version are you on) through to thunderbird and others. Frankly 2003 (22 years old) is not worth the effort.
