sending plusnet email when not logged in via plusnet

Simple question.
If I'm located elsewhere than home so using a different house connection which is not on Plusnet or indeed BT can I still send/receive emails via my email client on my laptop from my Plusnet address as normal or would I need to log in to the webmail interface to receive/send.
(I'm asking as I've heard that some ISP's block you from sending if you are not logged in/using your connection)
