"The attempt to read data from the server “imap.plus.net” failed."

Possibly linked to the issues described in I take it Webmail's down again?
For about an hour now, I've been getting this error message:
"The attempt to read data from the server “imap.plus.net” failed."
It is intermittent - sometimes email seems to arrive, and sometimes it doesn't.
I'm using Mac OS X 10.8.5 and Mail 6.6.
When I try to manually initiate a sync after having got the above error message, I get:
"The connection to the server “imap.plus.net” on port 143 timed out."
It seems to have slowed sending to the smtp server too.
