problems connecting to server

Hi, I'm new plus net customer and not very good with computers lol.  I'm using a macbook pro with lion 10.9.3.  I followed the email set up guides exactly but when I came to use mail I got the the connection error "“ mail.plus.net” cannot be contacted on port 110." Has anyone had this problem and if so how can I fix it.  Many thanks in advance.  Len

Re: problems connecting to server

Hi Len,
Can you confirm which mail app you're using and if you have the authentication turned on for your incoming mail server?
It's been a while since I setup my Mac mail but the incoming mail server port is definitely 110 when I last checked  Undecided

Thanks,
Adam C

Re: problems connecting to server

Hi Len,
Sounds like the settings you have there are correct then so I could do with checking a few more if that's OK?

  • Are you connected to the internet via wireless or wired?

  • Have you had any issues with browsing websites using the Mac?

  • Have you altered any DNS settings in your router or on the Mac yourself recently?

  • Are you able to send mail to an address to test the outgoing mail?

Thanks,
Adam C

Re: problems connecting to server

Hi again Len,
If nothing has been changed then this leaves me a little stumped unless you have an issue with TCP/IP over wireless as outlined and fixed here.

Here's a quick breakdown of the fix from that thread:
Quote
They probably did something like enter the address of their private DNS
server, or set up to use a proxy server.
To fix it, go into System Preferences, Network and double-click on the
Airport network interface.
First, look at the TCP/IP tab. It should be set to get its IP address
from a DHCP server, and the list of DNS servers should be empty.
Next, look at the Proxies tab. All of the proxy server options should be
unchecked.
When you find the offending setting and have fixed it, click the Apply
button.

If this isn't caused by the issue above is there any chance you could test this while wired to the router directly so that we can rule out the airport function?

Hope this helps,
Adam C

Re: problems connecting to server

I'll try and connect the laptop to the router and see if that makes a difference  well I tried connecting directly to the modem and I got this  "The server “ mail.plus.net” cannot be contacted on port 110."

Re: problems connecting to server

From your post it looks like there is a space character in front of mail.plus.net. Is there really one there?
