opening/reading messages

When I go into my Inbox (Outlook Express) messages are displayed int the Preview pane "automatically"
Is there any way I can avoid this so that  a message is only displayed, say, when I click on the message.
It seems to me that automatically displaying a message is inviting security lapses.

Re: opening/reading messages

In Outlook Express menu bar at the top, if you click on View then in the dropdown list click on Layout.
This opens a new window. The lower half of the window has the set up details for the Preview Pane. Untick the option to Show Preview Pane and click on OK. This will give you what you want. If you want to reinstate the preview pane in the future simply go back and tick the option

You're welcome
@pierre-pierre
IIRC in Thunderbird IMAP Inbox you can can turn the message pane on and off from the View option.

Re: opening/reading messages

Just checked my Thunderbird install and emails aren't downloaded for me if I've the preview pane closed. I'm using IMAP as well, although I've disabled the option that synchronises your local machine with what's on the server. Perhaps that's what you need to do Pierre?

This new version of Thunderbird comes with a new and better search functionality.  To experience this new search you'll need to synchronize your email messages.

Synchronize Required: 85.3 MB
You'll see faster message loading and better search results.

Do not Synchronize
This will mean slower message loading and incomplete search results.

Customize your synchronization needs per account and folder.

So it is! Looks like I'm still running 3.0.4 on the work lappy.
