Are you by any chance with 3 mobile? If so the comments in the topic connecting ipnone4 to plusnet might help.

What error message, if any, do you get when you try to send or receive?
Have you read through the guide on the website here for setting it up on a phone?
I have the same problem, by the way.  I have followed the guide and it seems to be something wrong with the SMTP username/password for me.
I get this error message:-
"The user name or password for "SMTP:username@relay.plus.net" is incorrect"
I have tried all combinations and they dont seem to work - I thought it just needed to be the same as the username and p/w I use to log in to the website?  SSL is off ... I am not sure on the Port 25 thingy, but I am not with 3 mobile.

@matzy, who is your mobile provider and would I be correct to assume that you're trying to send using your data connection, or are you using Wi-Fi?

You are entering just 'username' as the username aren't you? i.e. you're not entering 'username@relay.plus.net'?
I've tested SMTP auth on your account and it definitely works!
