freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

This happens periodically, it has been a year or so since last time (I think).

It has started happening again today, I open my Windows Live Mail and it asks

me for my password (in a small dialog box)... and again... and again.

I can receive mail but not send it.

Can someone sort this out please?

I can send mail from my webmail account ok. I have tried rebooting etc. but to no avail.

Thanks.

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

Sounds like an issue with windows live mail. Try deleting the mailbox from live mail then resetting it up. If you use POP3 you may have to backup your emails first

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

Fix

Day before yesterday changed outgoing SMTP to 25 from 587 (no change).

Yesterday evening changed it back to 587 and I am now sending my emails again!

Strange but working!

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

I would suspect some other issue and doubt that this is actually fixed...

  1. Is Plusnet your ISP - that is are you using a retained mail account, albeit no longer using Plusnet as your ISP?
  2. Is the problem you report on a device connected to your Plusnet WiFi service or on one connected via 3/4/5G?
  3. Is the out going server configured for authenticated connection?
  4. Is the out going server configured for encrypted connection?

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

My system is Windows 7 / WLM.

1. ISP is Vodafone using a 4G dongle

2. Laptop connected via USB lead to dongle

3. No encryption set.

4. Outgoing server ticked for authenticate connection.

I have a friend with the same setup who periodically gets the same problem
(but seems to last longer with him).

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

That explains everything!

You will have been suffering from "IP address has a poor reputation" which happens a lot with mobile networks, due to the way users appear to abuse such connections.  Expect the issue to return.

Enabling encryption is always a wise choice.

IMAP - Port 993 SSL/TLS

SMTP - Port 587 STARTTLS

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

So are you saying that encryption will circumvent this problem?

Re: freenetname - repeated request for password - unable to send mail

No not in the slightest, but encryption is a wise way of working.  Some email clients tend to enforce encryption.
