Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

One of the few things that seem to be consistent when this happens is that I can still access my emails via dialup.

Attached is a tracert done while on-line via my dial-up connection.

I also did a telnet to mail.freenetname.co.uk 110 and that was successful.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

Still weird...... around a couple of minutes when I get the old error message back and can't send/receive emails,

then suddenly it all starts working ok again.....

Last time I get as far as logging into the Forum and then it works and I think "forget it" - this time I had got as far

as my thread, so I am logging it at 15:38hrs.

I have never had this fault this intermittent, usually it happens for a day or so (solid) and then completely goes away.

I did a telnet which failed, now done one which is ok.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

I suggest changing the server timeout to 1 min 30 sec in advanced settings. Just the one change to see if the intermittent behaviour is eliminated.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

Whilst this problem is occurring, what does general web browsing look like?

Have you rebooted the laptop and router? I recently spent a long time looking at a user having problems sending emails with attachments. Kept getting server timeouts. Small emails sent ok. Reduced the sizes of the attached images substantially but still no success. In shear desperation I rebooted to router and the queued emails sent instantly. No understandable logic!

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

I do not have a router, I have a Vodafone dongle (connected to the laptop via a cable).

Web browsing is perfectly ok, it is just the emails that do not get through sometimes.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

Heads up - it is happening again!

Started up this morning at 8am and could send but not receive emails via my dongle.

So I spent £6 on a BT-Fon wifi connection and it then works.

Go back to my dongle and I get the error message again.

(I am assuming it will probably work on dial-up as usual).

Telnet to mail.freenetname.co.uk fails when connected via the dongle.

But (as you can see) I connect to the internet via my browser perfectly well on the dongle.

I can also log in and see my Webmail ok.

(I am out this morning / back after lunch).

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

It is 12:15 (lunchtime) and I have just switched on the laptop.....

everything is now working normally.

Any suggestions as to what info I can provide next time - let me know!

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

The tracert via the dongle to the freenetname mail server shows the expected result - policy-blocked at the boundary to the Plusnet network.

Was the telnet check which also failed done to port 110 (the POP3 port)?

Have you tried shutting the laptop down completely when receiving messages fails, wait a few (eg 5) minutes, then try again? Or does that happen in any case when you switch between dongle and BT-FON?

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

Yes, I did do the telnet to Port 110.

Yes, when it happened at 8.00am this morning I switched everything off and about

half an hour later switched it all back on again but it still didn't work.

Is there some way the dongle could pass on but change data so that it fails further on?

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

It's a bit of an odd one.

What I'd like to definitively see is you connected on the dongle and showing that sometimes you can telnet to the pop3 port and see the login prompt(with time and date) and that sometimes on the same dongle you can't.  That's what I think is in this thread, but it would be good for another example.

We've got an internal problem raised for this: 105757.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

@Kelly

@fairmaiden provided me with the attached tracetcp results using the dongle and using BT-Fon. These were done at the weekend when both were working. Need it to fail again to get a dongle trace in the failed state.

tracetcp using dongleDongletracetcp.jpg

 tracetcp using BT-FonBT-Fontracetcp.jpg

These head for alternative IPs with the BT-Fon one traversing the DSName twice. Is that a clue to the cause of the problem when collecting mail fails? I have in mind the problems seen with mail-plus.net IPs last Nov.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

@Kelly @spraxyt Currently NOT working with dongle, but DID work with BT-Fon for a short while before BT-Fon dropped the line. (it does that quite a bit here and I can't get it back at present).

Attached is the tractcp for the dongle while it is NOT working.

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

@Kelly @spraxyt Sorry, hit this on the head for the moment as (a) it is working and (b) I am not absolutely

sure that I did the tracetcp as Administrator (unless you can tell from the result).

Re: freenetname - no send/receive for 2 days

@fairmaiden Using the dongle could you try

tracetcp 212.159.8.233:110
and (different third octet)
tracetcp 212.159.9.233:110

If the first of those works could you try replacing the incoming server name mail.freenetname.co.uk with the IP

212.159.8.233

in Windows Live Mail and see if that works? You could try this anyway even if tracetcp fails.

Your "not working" trace shows no responses after reaching Colindale, where previously there was. Tracetcp from my connection reached both server IPs initially, but fails to reach 212.159.9.233 now. Huh
