hi , i managed to get my free online email to go to outlook email client on
android phone but only after using port 465.
Im trying to set it up now on gmail client now as outlook seems slow to receive.
Gmail setup says email address or password incorrect.
But if change email addess to username only it goes forward.
But then says outgoing server settings couldnt open connection to server.
Have tried the options they offer to chang including ssltls starttls with or without certificate but no joy, And different port nos.
Any plusnet web page specifically for free online setup in email clients?
Fixed! Go to the fix.

Not totally sure what you are trying to do and what is going wrong.
Port 465 relates to SENDING emails not receiving them. Port 465 is deprecated and ought not to be used. Port 587 is the correct port. If you want to use encryption, it should be set to STARTTLS.
Gmail is NOT an IMAP client, but a POP3 client and as such Google will harvest all of your emails and stores them on its servers ... and do who knows what with their contents.
As for set up instructions, have you read the sticky topics at the top of this board?

thanks . yes have read lots.
Out of interest you say "Gmail is NOT an IMAP client"
The gmail client settings offers imap or pop. I chose imap.
Would it still acts as a pop3 email client after choosing that option?

Thanks for your post @andytab
It shouldn't do, if you've set it up as IMAP it should do just as it says on the tin.
I've never set up an email account on the Gmail app before other than natively using Gmail but there's a first time for everything. I've just gone through the setup process now with one of my Plusnet email addresses.
I went through the below steps and I'm now successfully able to send and receive mail.
1. Open up the Gmail app
2. Click the Sign In button then Add another account
3. Select the Other (IMAP) option
4. Type in your email address
5. On the next page you'll need to enter the following details for Incoming server settings
Username (change this from your email address) and mailbox password
IMAP server: imap.free-online.net
Port: 993
Security type: SSL/TLS
6. On the page after you'll need to enter the below details for Outgoing server settings
Username (change this from your email address) and mailbox password
SMTP server: relay.free-online.net
Port: 587
Security type: STARTTLS
Let me know how you get on.

Gandalph youre a star.
I got myself in a cul de sac , was concentrating on server settings only
and this was what i didnt do.
"On the next page you'll need to enter the following details for Incoming server settings
Username (change this from your email address)"
After that i didnt have to put in port nos. It chooses 993 for oncoming andd 465 for outgoing
and SSL/TLS
It works , so for now ill leave port nos as they are and try that port no 587 another day.

I've been having massive problems trying to get plusnet mail working on outlook on an android phone. Was working until a year ago, then I had to use GMail, because there was no way I could get outlook working.
I tried again today, and had some success. First, I added my basic plusnet account (anyone@mydomain.plus.com), using ports 993 and 465 (the default ones that we are not supposed to use). It added OK, and after that, I was also able to add my mydomain+ accounts.
I know there's another thread out there discussing this, but it is locked, and I have never seen a satisfactory solution. Hope this helps
