emails will not send on my ipad

I can receive emails but cannot send emails on my ipad. The model is A1416. When I try to send, I get the message "the username or password for 'SMPT:username@relay.plus.net'  is incorrect. I have checked the username and password and they are correct and the same as for the incoming server.

Re: emails will not send on my ipad

I had a similar occurrence with my iPad a month ago. I tried removing the email account (google) and reinstating it. No use. I then just erased the iPad and started from scratch. That worked. I didn’t have anything important on it as I just used it for ebooks so it was easy to erase. You could try backing up via iTunes to a computer or iCloud and restoring it.

No problem at all, please just do this whenever it's convenient for you and let us know if this doesn't resolve the issue.

Re: emails will not send on my ipad

I have a similar issue with my iPad mini and iphone6. I removed the account; set it up again; sent one email and then couldn’t send another email?
The issue only affects sending email.
I have not been able to check the port number for sending email as the online guide doesn’t work for me.

Re: emails will not send on my ipad

Sorry to hear that @frank3

Have you updated all the devices in question to iOS12 recently by any chance?

Re: emails will not send on my ipad

With iPads and iPhone6, to check outgoing server settings do the following.

From the Home screen, find and tap Settings
Tap Passwords & Accounts, then tap an account in the Accounts list

Tap the Account line under IMAP
IMAP Account information and Incoming Mail Server settins should be seen
Below that is Outgoing Mail Server, tap the SMTP line
The Primary Server line should say relay.plus.net and On. Tap this
The Server slider should be green with Outgoing Mail Server information below
This should be Host Name relay.plus.net
Username accountname or accountname+mailboxname as appropriate
Password for accountname or mailboxname depending on username
Use SSL slider grey (turned off)
Authentication Password
Server Port 587
Tap Done when the settings are correct then tap < Account to go back to the Account page

Tap Advanced then set Mailbox Behaviours
Tap Drafts, Sent and Deleted Mailboxes in turn and in the On The Server section
Tap Drafts then <Advanced, Sent then <Advanced, Deleted then <Advanced respectively
Under Move Discarded Messages Into make sure there is a tick against Deleted Mailbox
Tap < Account to go back then Done

Tap < Accounts and < Settings to return to the top level.

Re: emails will not send on my ipad

I had the same problem. Had updated to the new IOS 12.01. It seems SSL was green. Simply turned it off and it now works for sending.

Re: emails will not send on my ipad

Thanks David,

I have updated both iPhone and iPad mini to 12.0.1 but the issue pre-dates the update.

After my message I once again deleted and then re-installed my account.

In following your advice all is well until I reach “On The Server” at which point no sub-menu appears when I tap on Drafts or on Sent or on Deleted. All I can achieve is to move the ‘tick’ around.

After I have sent my ‘first’ message with this re-installed account I will check to see if any settings change.

There isn't a sub-menu; moving the tick is what happens, it sets that folder on the server to hold messages fitting the description (Drafts, Sent or Deleted respectively).

The < Advanced action is top left to take you back to the previous screen so after setting Drafts you can set Sent (and return) then Deleted (and return).

By default with new accounts Drafts, Sent and Deleted messages are kept on the local device - which is not what most users want. Changing the behaviour as described ensures the relevant folders on the server are used (for managing within the Mail app or webmail for example)..
